Percy Vining was born on May 07, 1940, in St. Helena Parish. He transitioned peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, TN where he resided since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Percy was born to the late George Washington "G.W.' Vining Sr. and the late Agnes Coleman Vining as 3 rd of nine children.
A son of a sharecropper, Percy knew what "hard work" meant at the tender age of 17 he moved to the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. There he found his 1 st job as an oyster shucker in the French Quarters for a number of years. Shucking over 20 oyster sacks a day. He developed skills in general construction as a cement finisher. He often worked in extreme weather conditions and towered over tall buildings. A dedicated member of the Construction and General Laborers Union Local 689 for over 40 years retiring in 2002. Two of his proudest construction jobs were the New Orleans Superdome home of the New Orleans Saints & One Shell Square.
Percy met his loving and dedicated wife Fairy Dean Brister of McComb Mississippi and they joined together in matrimony on February 18, 1966 – April 3, 1984.
After the death of his wife, Percy found love again. He met Qunisa M. Bell of New Orleans, LA and they joined together on August 14, 1999- 2007. They remained close friends through his death.
He will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren, sisters, in-laws, godson, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife Fairy Dean Brister Vining, his parents George Washington Vining Sr. and Anges Coleman Vining, his brothers, George Washington Vining Jr., David "Buster" Vining, Bernard Vining, best friend Joseph James Vining, and sister Mary Vining.
Percy is survived by his beloved children: Reginald Smith (Ramona Smith) of Wilmington, North Carolina; Zelma Denise Vining of Manteca, California; & Trina Vining Gillam (Fredrick Gillam Jr.) of Cordova, TN; grandchildren; LaTrina Jones of Texas; Reginald Denord Sidbury Smith (Jo'Landa Sidbury) of North Carolina; Malik Percy Gillam "Buddy" of Memphis, TN; Maya Christina Gillam of Beaumont, TX; 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren
Siblings: Margaret Henry (Herman Henry) of Amite, LA., Dorothy Dell Stevenson (Lionel Stevenson Sr.) of Belle Chase LA., and Betty Jane Vining of Memphis, TN; Aunt Elizabeth Coleman Jackson of Marin, California; Godson: Damayon Joseph Vining (Twila Franklin-Vining) of New Orleans, LA; & a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
