On Sunday, October 18, 2020, God called John Henry Johnson of New Orleans, Louisiana, home to be with his Lord and Savior. Pastor John W. Houston Jr. read the 23rd Psalm and prayed at his bedside as he transitioned into the arms of the Lord. He was born on May 7, 1932 to Will and Josephine Perry Johnson in Velma, LA. At an early age he was taught that it was far better to give than to receive, as Christ did. In his 20's he relocated to New Orleans to find better opportunities in life. He persevered and worked several odd jobs until he landed a job as a trucker. He professionally drove 18-wheelers across the state, whistling while he did so. He would occasionally drive for Carnival until he retired. While driving, he would eat at several great places and happily made recommendations to others. He met the love of his life, Annie Mae Evans, and they were married for forty-four years. Annie Mae would often bake his favorite dessert, lemon meringue pie. To this union, one child was born, Linda Ann. It was no secret that his daughter was the apple of his eye. For their children, John and his neighbor Percy Gibson would alternate dressing as Santa for Christmas. Affectionately known as "Uncle Jay" or "Jay" to his family, friends and community. He was an unselfish man who often gave time, money, food and so much more to others. After Hurricane Katrina, John Henry lived in San Antonio with his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters. While in San Antonio, he taught his granddaughter's the rules of baseball and became smitten with the family dog, taking him on long walks without a leash. The dog recognized John's kind nature and followed him unconditionally. John Henry Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, 5 siblings, 1 grandson and 1 great-granddaughter. He leaves to mourn and cherish his wonderful memories; children, Linda Anthony (Barry) – San Antonio, TX; Shirlene Nelson – Los Angeles, CA; Dale Parker – Dallas, TX; and Michael Johnson – New Orleans, LA.; 4 Grandchildren, 7 Great-Grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
