In Loving Memory of Irene R. Butler

Obituary January 2, 1938 – October 2, 2026 On October 2, 2026, Irene R. Butler peacefully departed this life at her home in Alabaster, Alabama, with her beloved son, Daryle L. Butler, faithfully caring for her until the end.

January 2, 1938 – October 2, 2026 On October 2, 2026, Irene R. Butler peacefully departed this life at her home in Alabaster, Alabama, with her beloved son, Daryle L. Butler, faithfully caring for her until the end. Irene was born on January 2, 1938, in Roseland, Louisiana, to Melvin Robinson and Florence Stewart Robinson. From those Louisiana roots grew a woman whose life would touch generations through education, service, mentorship, motherhood, and, above all, an unwavering faith in God.

A Life Rooted in Faith

Irene's relationship with God began early. At the age of twelve, she was baptized in the Tangipahoa River by Rev. J. C. White of Rosevalley Missionary Baptist Church. That moment was only the beginning of a lifetime of Christian service. As an adult at Rosevalley, Irene served on the Usher Board and Women's Missionary Union and was a member and one of the lead singers of the Senior Choir. Her faith traveled with her wherever life led. After moving to Atlanta, Georgia, Irene joined West Hunter Street Baptist Church in 1987, where she served on Usher Board #1 and the J.J. Abernathy Missionary Circle. She later became a member of Trinity Baptist Church in 2004, where her service continued as Chairperson of the Birth Month Council and through the Helping Hands and Pastor's Aide ministries. Following retirement, and while courageously facing cancer for a second time, Irene moved to Alabaster, Alabama, to live with Daryle while seeking treatment through UAB's cancer treatment centers. She joined Hunter Street Baptist Church and regularly attended worship alongside her son. For Irene, faith was more than something spoken about on Sunday morning. It was something she lived. She followed God's calling upon her life by serving, helping, teaching, encouraging, and making herself available to others. She understood that ministry does not always happen from behind a pulpit. Sometimes it happens through a song, a helping hand, a lesson taught, a young person encouraged, a family supported, or simply by being present when someone needs you.

An Educator, Mentor, and Servant

Education was another calling woven deeply into Irene's life. A graduate of Grambling State University with a bachelor's degree in education, Irene later completed her master's degree in education at Southeastern Louisiana University and continued her studies with an additional 30 hours toward a Doctor of Education at Southern University in Baton Rouge. But Irene's greatest lessons were not confined to textbooks or classrooms. She devoted 25 years to the Louisiana school system as an educator. Afterward, she began another remarkable chapter of service in Georgia, spending 17 years with Fulton County Juvenile Probation as a Fulton County Court Drug Coordinator. Across those years, Irene encountered countless young people and families. She had the heart of a mentor, believing that people were worth investing in, worth encouraging, and worth giving another opportunity to find their way. Her influence reached far beyond any job title. The true measure of her life's work can be found in the people whose lives were better because Irene Butler took the time to care.

A Mother's Love

Yet among all the titles Irene carried throughout her life, there was one that stood above the rest:

“Mother”

As a single mother, Irene gave her son Daryle something that cannot be adequately measured in words. She gave him herself. She was his mother, teacher, example, encourager, protector, spiritual foundation, and one of the strongest influences upon the man he would become. She showed him what faith looked like when life was difficult. She demonstrated perseverance when quitting would have been easier. She taught him through her example that serving others matters, education matters, character matters, and that when God places a calling upon your life, you answer it. And in one of life's most meaningful circles, the son whom she had spent a lifetime loving and caring for was there at home caring for her as her earthly journey came to its close. For Daryle, Irene was not merely a good mother. She was the best mother a son could have asked for. Her influence also lives on in the many young people connected to Daryle through his own calling as "Coach" Butler, whom the family lovingly recognizes as Irene's non-biological grandchildren. In that way, the love, guidance, and faith Irene poured into her son continues to reach another generation.

A Life Well Lived

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Florence Robinson; her brothers, Jonnie, Jesse, Melvin Jr., and Lionel; and her daughter, Sonia Butler. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, Daryle L. Butler of Alabama; many cousins, nieces and nephews; her extended family; and the many non-biological grandchildren whose connection to Irene came through God's calling upon her son's life. But the story of Irene R. Butler cannot truly be contained between January 2, 1938, and October 2, 2026. Her story continues. It continues in every life she mentored. It continues in every student she taught. It continues in the people she served. It continues in the churches where she worshiped, sang, ushered, helped, and ministered. And perhaps most beautifully, it continues in her son. Irene answered God's calling on her life faithfully. She served when there was work to be done. She gave when someone needed help. She persevered through life's difficult seasons. She loved her family deeply. And she left behind something far more enduring than earthly accomplishments: a legacy of faith, service, strength, compassion, and love. For those who loved her, there is tremendous sadness in saying goodbye. But there is also gratitude. Gratitude that God gave this world Irene R. Butler. Gratitude for the years He allowed her to teach, mentor, serve, sing, encourage, nurture, and love. And gratitude for the privilege of simply calling her Mom.

Her work is finished. Her legacy is not.
