Sister Gladys Martin, passed away on November 20, 2023 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; having
lived a very full life until the age of 96 years old.

She was born on February 13, 1927, in Amite, Louisiana, to Ardes Bennett and Silas Williams.
She was a proud life-long resident of Hammond, Louisiana, where she spent most of her life
with her husband, the late Warren Martin, a military veteran and farmer.

For greater than thirty-five years Gladys Martin was affiliated with the Tangipahoa Parish
School system where she was educated and dedicated her life to teaching and service. She
received her Bachelor of Science at Grambling State University, her Master of Education at
Southern University, and further training and credits at Southeastern Louisiana University,
Dillard University, and Delgado Community Colleges.

Professionally, she used those degrees teaching students at various grade levels and serving as
an Assistant Principal. Her professional organization affiliations included the Louisiana
Association of Educators, Parish Association of Educators, Southern Association of College and
Schools, and Southeastern Louisiana Advisory Board. Among her leadership roles, she served as
President of the Parish Kindergarten organization, 4-H Leader, and Parish PIP Committee.

She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, and served her community in the
church, 4-H, and other organizations.

Most importantly, she was a born-again Christian, having prepared herself scholastically for a
life of service to others. She had a disciplined and unwavering dedication to the African
Methodist Episcopal Church where she was baptized, served, and held many teaching and
leadership roles.

She believed that an individual's happiness does not lie in freedom and wealth, but acceptance
of duty. She was a caring individual, tirelessly serving her family, ministers, fellow Christians,
and many others.

Gladys Martin is preceded in death by her husband, James Warren Martin; her mother, Ardes
Bennett; her older brother Alexander Porter; sisters, Lula Y. Johnson (Joseph B. Johnson) and
Thelma Williams. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins.
