Frances Lee Toney Johnson was born on May 31, 1943 to the late Hermon Toney and Ruby Jackson Toney. Frances accepted Christ at an early age and faithfully served at Leonard Chapel A.M.E. Church.  Frances was educated in St. Helena parish and graduated from St. Helena High School in 1962.  Frances attended college and then married the love of her life, John Earl Johnson.  She and John Earl relocated to Chicago, Illinois and made a home for their four children - Robert, Brian, Bruce and Karin. While in Chicago, Frances became a part of a welcoming community and enjoyed a fulfilling career with the U.S. Postal Service while parenting three active boys and a sweet baby girl. Frances was also an active member of Zion Rock Missionary Baptist Church. Upon returning home, Frances resumed her life here as if she had never left.  She returned to Leonard Chapel and her career at Hammond State School. Although she experienced deep grief during the loss of three of her children, her love for family grew even stronger. She was a proud and doting mother and grandmother, her conversations always turning to their accomplishments and successes. Her favorite Bible passage was the fifth chapter of Matthew, verses 1 -12, often referred to as "The Beatitudes"". In recent years, Frances joined Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church with her husband, John Earl, and she remained after his passing, serving as a deaconess, a leader in the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society and a church school and Bible study stalwart.  Frances was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Stella Chapter No. 2 and New Image Social Society, a Fifth Ward community organization focused on the social engagement of seniors. All who knew Frances knew that she loved everyone, was a kind and understanding listener, had the sweetest smile, crafted legendary meals and baked the best cakes in the state! Frances was the true embodiment of a missionary – she fed the hungry, visited the sick and served and prayed  not only for her church family, but for the entire community.  Her love knew no boundaries and all of those around her felt special in her presence.  Frances loved spending time with family, but also made special time for her friends.  Her porches are filled with plants which also garnered her daily attention. Her fruit trees brought joy to satsumas lovers, near and far.  Many have shared a warm cup of coffee or a cool drink on that front porch with Frances, in both good times and difficult times. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, John Earl Johnson; her daughter, Karin; her sons, Robert Earl and Brian; and her parents, Hermon Toney and Ruby Jackson Toney. Also preceding Frances in death were her brother, Joe Lewis Toney and three sisters, Lucille Ayers, Alma Rosette and Audrey Coleman. Frances leaves to cherish sweet memories, her son, Bruce Anthony Johnson and his wife, Portia Knowles Johnson; her grandchildren, Bruce Anthony Johnson, Jr., Brian Johnson, Jr. and Karin Jones; a daughter-in law, Sandra Simmons Johnson; her sisters, Bobbi Jean Jackson and Mary Alexander; her brothers, Hermon Toney, Jr. (Carrie) and Nathaniel Toney; her brothers in law, Willie G. Johnson (Florena) and Ronald E. Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
