Obituary

~ Reflections of Evelyn Leverne Carter Brumfield's Life ~

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God
bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and
remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord
himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the
trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be
caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be
with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18
Evelyn Leverne Carter Brumfield was born on October 1, 1921 in St. Helena Parish to
Monroe and Bertha Carter. She was affectionately known to family and friends as "Big
Mother."
Leverne received Christ at an early age at Sheridan Chapel AME Church. She married
Shelby Arsinue Brumfield, Sr. and to this union eleven children were born. Leverne
relocated to Kentwood, LA where she began her service at Big Creek AME Church.
Later on in life, Leverne joined Turner Chapel Roseland AME Church as an affiliate
member where she served faithfully as President of the Usher Board, member of the
Women's Missionary Society, Stewardess, President of Pastor's Aide and head of the
Feeding Ministry.
Leverne had a special love for people, especially children in the church and community.
She extended her home as a caregiver for many children for many years. The same was
done for humanity. She could always be found cooking, baking, encouraging others and
most of all praying!
Who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies and the family of Evelyn
Leverne Carter Brumfield was blessed to have her in their lives. Her constant saying was
"I am still holding to God's unchanging hand."
Leverne was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe & Bertha Carter; husband, Shelby
A. Sr.; (2) daughters, Geradine Lewis & Lorraine Brumfield; (3) sons, Winston, Shelby
A. Jr., & Allen Brumfield; (1) granddaughter, Lavern Lark and (1) grandson, Elton
Washington.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory her children, Monroe, Emile (Alvena), Cynthia,
Michael (Gloria), Charles, and Brenda; (2) daughters in law, Georgie & Eleanor; (1)
godson, Reverend Leroy Taylor; (21) grandchildren; (27) great grandchildren; (12) great-
great grandchildren; (1) sister, Mildred Gordon; (1) brother, Dennis Carter (Pat) and a
host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
