A Time For Birth:

Edith Evans was worn October 27, 1921 as the sixth child of 12 to the late Willie Evans, Sr. and Luler Williams Evans in Wilmer, Louisiana.  She was small in stature even as a baby but had a huge personality and soon developed a sense of humor and enormous work ethics.

A Time To Harvest:

As a young girl, growing up in the country and having to help her parents and siblings on the 40 acres of land, Edith had many tasks to do.  She learned early the value of hard work and sacrifice.   She along with her mother and siblings walked miles to church- the Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church.  She also had to walk there for her formative years of training.    Edith remained a faithful member of the Oak Ridge Church serving as an Usher, a member of the Hospitality and Food Committee, a member of the Pastor Aid, and a willing participant on many church programs.  She later united with the Brown Chapel M. B. Church where she attended faithfully for over 23 years and served in the Senior Mission Department and Pastor Aid Committee until her health began to fail.  She remained a servant for the Lord at Brown Chapel for 25 years until her death.

A Time To Love:

Edith met, fell in love, and later married Jimmy Perry.  She never waivered from her love of family- her children, her siblings, her friends, or the love of people in general.

A Time To Building:

Jim and Edith raised 8 children of which 6 were born from their union:  Carrie Lee, Geraldine, Melvin, Jimmy, Jr., Leon, Johnnie, Charles Ray, and Rose Mary.  Edith was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She worked seemingly tireless from sun-up to sun-down.  Crops were planted and even in her golden years she would work in

the fields and out picked everyone either at scraping or picking cotton, beans, or pulling corn.  The perry family owned a dairy and she would milk cows, cook delicious hot meals, made quilts and was somewhat of a seamstress. Edith would do it all!  She tried to instill within her children the value of hard work and the desire for a better and easier life for them.  She worked and cleaned many homes for mere pennies to help support her family.  She also worked for the Tangipahoa Parish School System as a Cafeteria Technician for many years.  As an employee of the TPSS she had the opportunity to travel to many states during the summer to the National School Food Service Conventions.  She thoroughly enjoyed her summer trips!!!

Edith had a way with words and people.  Her nieces would often call her and ask her to make or teach them how to prepare some of her infamous dishes like her collard or mustard greens, chicken & dumpling, egg pies, or even how to preserve various foods.  Her sense of humor will forever be remembered!

A Time To Die:

Edith was preceded in death by her parents: Willie and Luler Evans, Sr., her 12 siblings-Zella Williams-Evans, Andrew Jackson "AJ", Gussie Conerly, Flossie Butler, Willie Jasper "JD", Alta Mae Smith, Eddie Sr., Delores Holden, Maeodra Wilson, Willie Jr., and Francis O'Neal.  THE EVANS

Three of her children preceded her in death: Melvin, Geraldine, and Leon.

She Leaves To Cherish 83 Years of Memories:

Carrie Lee Garrett of Folsom, LA, Jimmy Jr. (Cynthia) of Wilmer, LA, Johnnie Dillon of Franklinton, LA, Charles Ray Perry (Theresa) of Wilmer, LA, and Rose Mary Dixon (Tyrone) of Harvey, LA; 22 Grandchildren, 56 Great Grandchildren, 35 Great-Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great-Great-Grandchild and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
