Sister Barbara Gordon Mason was born Barbara Jean Gordon July 27, 1946 to Susan Mary Gordon and Sherman J. Gordon. She was born at Lallie Kemp Medical Center located in Independence, Louisiana. She has two brothers and two sisters. Sherman P. Gordon, Michael Gordon, Bernia Gordon Dokes, and Iola Innis. Sister Barbara departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 10:20 am in the comfort of her beloved home.
Barbara accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a very early age as a young lady. She immediately began to utilize her wisdom to work in all areas of the church as well as within her community. She was an active member of Leonard Chapel A.M.E. Church for all of her life. She served The Missionary Society, The Steward Board, The Sunday School Convention, The Board of St. Helena Hospital, as well as The Board of Christian Education at her church. Barbara held several significant positions in the church as the Superintendent of Greater New Orleans Greensburg District, Church Secretary, Church Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, YPD Choir Director, and Adult Choir Director. Barbara also served The Eastern Star as Grand Worthy Matron of the state of Louisiana, Past Worthy Matron Of Stella Chapter #2 O.E.S. and Past Grand Associate Matron of Queen Elizabeth Grand Chapter O.E.S.
She received her early education in St. Helena Parish, graduating with the class of 1964 from St. Helena High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in May of 1968, from Southern University A&M College, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Master of Education in December of 1976 from Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, Louisiana; Master of Education in Mass Communications in July of 1983 from Southern University A&M College, Baton Rouge, La; and she also received her Master's Degree Plus 30 in July of 1983 from Southern University A&M College, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She began her teaching career as a Civics, Social Studies, and World History teacher. Barbara maintained this career for 34 years.
Relatives and friends all called her "Bobby". Cousins, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren all called her "MEME". All who knew her found her to be such a sweet, kind, loving, genuine, caring, compassionate, gentle, and gracious woman. There was a very special bond between her and her best friend, Dianne Richardson who also called her "MEME". She leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter: Stella Renee Mason of Independence, Louisiana; Three grandchildren: Kyron Dalevaughn Mason of Independence, Louisiana; Mylecia Donielle Mason of Independence, Louisiana; Kyleiah Chris'haun Mason of Independence, Louisiana; Three great grandchildren: Dreux Zedor West of Independence, Louisiana; Denver Samiyah Mason of Independence, Louisiana; Salai Adera Mason of Independence, Louisiana; Nieces, Nephews, Great nieces, Great nephews, Cousins, along with many other relatives and friends.
Barbara Jean Gordon Mason of Independence, LA passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023. Barbara was born July 27, 1946 to Sherman Gordon and Susan Mae Jackson.
A Public Visitation is Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Greater Community COGIC from 10am - 11am. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Greater Community COGIC at 11am. Greater Community COGIC is located 61489 Bennett Road Amite, LA 70422.
